Project Title: Visiting Scholar program for the Combinatorics Research Institute

Abstract: During the summer of 2001, the Department of Mathematical Sciences established a Combinatorics Research Institute with headquarters in the newly-refurbished Widmaier house. The primary mission of CRI is to investigate emerging applications of combinatorics. These applications include cryptography, bioinformatics, software testing, error correcting codes, and network reliability, among others. In order to make this mission successful, we need to establish close ties with the leading research scholars from industry and academia. To accomplish this, we intend to establish a visiting scholar program. Through this program, the department plans hope to offer a series of lectures and possibly a conference that features these leading authorities. This will not only improve our chances of obtaining external funding, but will also enhance the education and the employment prospects of our majors and Ph.D. students.
