Project Title: Development of a Nationally Recognized Transportation/Materials Research Center

Abstract: The Transportation/Materials Research Center (TMRC) has experienced growth in research funding through contracts with the National Science Foundation, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, the Federal Highway Administration, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and Conoco, Inc. More recently, a unique partnership between the TMRC and MDOT is evolving with five-year support for research staff funding in the areas of pavements (asphalt and concrete) and structures receiving preliminary approval. The funding for staff will be for a research engineer, two half-time appointments for research engineers, and two half-time appointments for technicians. MDOT's new approach for conducting research is following a national trend for outsourcing these programs. The TMRC is seeking support from Michigan Tech through the Vision Fund for staff support and additional space. This support will greatly assist the TMRC in leveraging other DOT's for resources to continue building regionally and nationally recognized research programs.
