Plan: Letter of Intent Project Title:
Tech Trails Model Forest Abstract: Outdoor recreation plays a big role in attracting students to Michigan Tech. The MTU Tech Trails provide year-round recreation opportunities for a variety of users. However, recent increases in the intensity of use have resulted in severe degradation of some parts of the trail network. The relative lack of trail maintenance is causing erosion and sedimentation into the streams in direct violation of Michigan's Best Management Practices for water quality. Also, significant hazards exist for trail users, creating liability issues for MTU. This program would provide for installing proper stream crossings, erecting signs, removing hazard trees and trash along the trails, and improving the overall forest health and aesthetic conditions within the trail network. Following completion, the Tech Trails would be used as a demonstration area for various stream crossing options, and serve as a model recreational forest and educational resource. Project Leader
