Plan: Letter of Intent Project Title:
Tech Outing Club Abstract:
Houghton, MTU, and the surrounding area was highlighted in the recent
National Geographic Traveler for the exceptional outdoor recreational
opportunities. We should use the area to our advantage when recruiting
students. We must not only showcase the opportunities, but provide a mechanism
for interested students to participate in outdoor activities such as alpine
and Nordic skiing, canoeing, kayaking, biking, climbing, hiking, and related
activities. We propose to develop an outing club with structures similar
to those at Dartmouth and the U. of Wisconsin-Madison that will provide
equipment, training (including safety training), and organized recreational
activities for interested students. The outing club would be a positive
extra-curricular activity for students, aiding in student retention.
