Plan: Letter of Intent Project Title:
Establish a better Presence in Northern Illinois and Outlying Areas Abstract:
This proposal involves the retention of a lodging and/or office space
in the Chicago suburn. For example, the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)
is available for researchers who can arrange their own stay in the area,
in order to use its unigue facilities for various research acitivities.
It will facilitate the collaboration between MTU and ANL researchers.
An inexpensive lodging facility will be needed when we apply to be a university
affiliate of a Nanotechnology center that is being planned to be constructed
at the ANL campus. Such a center will provide us access to cleanrooms,
wetlabs, and the X-Ray synchrotron source. A lodging and/or office facility
in the Chicago area could also enhance our interactions with other are
universities. It could be used as a forward base for recruiting students
in the area, which is also a good source of diversity-improving student
