Project Title: Becoming a University of Choice for Native American Students

Abstract: Michigan Tech has the opportunity to forge stronger relationships with the Native American community in order to enhance our outreach activities, student body diversity and experience and research. To accomplish this, a strategic initiative is proposed that supports the Native American Outreach Coordinator position which in collaboration with various University faculty and with leaders at the University and in the Native American community will ensure that:
Native American students will be strategically recruited and enrolled at MTU; Native American student retention efforts will be enhanced; MTU students have a number of formal and informal chances to experience Native American history, language and culture; Forums for proposing research and education partnerships with Native American organizations will be increased; and a proposal for a multicultural center with a Native American focus will be developed.
