Plan: Letter of Intent Project Title:
Undergraduate/Graduate Program on Fundamentals of Mathematical/Physical/Engineering
Sciences with emphasis on Nanotechnology Abstract:
An interdisciplinary transdepartmental program at the undergraduate and
graduate level is proposed with an international component. At the undergraduate
level existing resources from the Departments of Mathematics, Physics,
Material Science, Mechanical Engineering and other units of MTU will be
pulled together to formulate a 4-year Honors Program (not ABET accredited)
to prepare students for Graduate School. Emphasis will be placed on teaching
basic courses in mathematics, physics, materials, and engineering sciences
with an orientation towards nanotechnology. This BS Honors Program will
be ultimately connected with a PhD Program in Nanoengineering Sciences
jointly sponsored by the Colleges of Engineering and Sciences/Arts. There
will be a strong link with other similar emerging programs in Europe and
NSF support will be sought to sustain this activity. Project Leader
