Project Title:
Reducing administrative costs in academic departments
Abstract:
Our university is currently in a financial crunch. This time can be a
period of low morale or an opportunity
to improve efficiency by reducing cost. One such area is the administrative
operation of academic departments. Faculty, as part of their professional
duties, are expected to do service for the university. Responsibility
without the associated authority has made committee service a dirty word.
This study proposes to examine administrative structures in academic departments,
identify good practices, and conduct cost analysis, to come up with a
set of recommendations for changes in department administrative structures
that would decrease administrative cost. Another important outcome of
such changes will be a feeling of increased ownership of departments,
which is the thrust of shared governance.
