Project Title: Becoming a National University of Choice - Attracting and Retaining a Greater Percentage of Minorities and Female Students

Abstract: If our students are going to "create the future," they must be able to thrive in environments populated by men and women of various ethnicities and cultures. Michigan Tech needs to help develop this ability in our classrooms. To create a diverse learning environment, the University must increase the number of students, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, African American and/or female who enroll.
The University already has a successful precollege outreach structure in place with a number of established partnerships. This initiative proposes to bring this success to a higher level through a targeted recruitment strategy. This strategic initiative is two pronged:
1. Complete the development and implementation of a multi-year precollege feeder program with the Detroit Academy of Environmental Science/Cass Tech/DAPCEP (Detroit Area Precollege Engineering Program)
2. Intensify follow-up with all precollege program alumni through: YP Pages newsletter, Improved Youth Program counselor training, hiring a part-time Youth Program alumni recruiter.
