Project Title: Enhanced Orientation and Preparation of International Graduate Teaching Assistants

Abstract: Increasing enrollment in the graduate programs is likely to entail enrolling more graduate students from other nations. Many of these students come with limited spoken language skills and profoundly different educational expectations. As the emphasis of a larger percentage of our faculty will be shifting toward research and graduate student supervision and mentoring, we reason that it is critical to prepare our international TA's for their instructional duties more uniformly, vigorously, and consistently.

Our proposal is to develop and implement an integrated and intensive six-week summer program using the expertise of several individuals who presently offer related services in isolation. The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development, the Center for International Education, and personnel associated with the Writing Center would be involved.
