Project Title: Recruiting Exceptional Minority Students in Science, Math and Engineering

Abstract: The math department will formalize its recruitment of exceptional minority students interested in science, math and engineering. The Young Scholars Program gives promising young scholars an early start to college and a chance to work with faculty members doing research. Students attend classes as part of the MaCH-I program. Classes have small enrollments, so the atmosphere is supportive and interactive.

Young Scholars also have the opportunity to pursue real research in their areas of interest. Students are co-researchers on nationally funded projects and begin developing collegial student/instructor relationships. Students present their findings to a faculty panel at the end of the summer. In addition to promoting student/faculty research, the Young Scholars Program will serve to increase the representation and retention of minority students at MTU.
