Plan: Letter of Intent Project Title:
An Ecumenical Approach to Attaining National Ranking for Michigan Tech's
Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Program Abstract: To become a National University of Choice, Michigan Tech will have to double the size of its graduate and research programs while maintaining baccalaureate enrollment and working within a very constrained budget. We will also have to develop national recognition for our graduate programs. To attain this goal, some of our engineering graduate programs must be ranked within the top 15 such programs in overall quality. The civil and environmental engineering baccalaureate programs at Michigan Tech are already well known with the Civil program ranked in the top five in terms of graduates, and the Environmental program tied for 11th with Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon in overall quality by the U.S. News and World Report rankings. The challenge is to increase our scholarly productivity. This initiative identifies the Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program as one on the cusp of increased scholarly productivity, and proposes to facilitate that increase through a modest investment in faculty positions plus facilitation of interdisciplinary collaboration and tangible rewards for such collaboration. The goal is to elevate the Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate and research programs to recognition within the top 15 programs within the next 10 years while providing commensurate recognition to the participating faculty.
