My collaboration with the Sustainable Futures Institute (SFI) while I was a graduate student at Michigan Tech strengthened my beliefs that we need to apply multidisciplinary approaches in order to understand and address complex environmental problems. The SFI program provided me with the opportunity to meet and interact with faculty and graduate students from other disciplines and universities. These interactions greatly influenced my long term research interests in conducting studies that integrate across fields in order to better understand the human dimensions and the bio-physical characteristics of rivers for achieving sustainable water systems. I am currently working as an associate professor at the Technological Institute of Sonora where I teach a course on Sustainability in the masters degree program of Natural Resources. I have included many of the topics, methods and group discussions that I learned when I was a student at MTU. One of the other projects in which I have applied the experiences that I learned at the SFI, is my collaboration in the creation of the US Mexico Border Water and Environmental Sustainability Training (UMB-WEST) program. This project is aimed at training students on field hydrologic measurements useful for water resources management, it teaches students how to work in teams, and it exposes them to water related decision makers that gives participating students a real sense on how to apply what they learned on the field. The experiences learned in these summer research program are aimed at advancing the state-of-the-art in professional hydrologic practice and to develop tools and information that can help achieve sustainable water systems in the northwest border region in Mexico and the USA.
