MacLean-Fogg culture and values have driven the once small Midwestern fastener company to one of the world’s leading suppliers in precision machining and component solutions.

Founded in 1925, today MacLean-Fogg is a global enterprise with 33 global manufacturing facilities, annual sales in excess of $1 billion, and a worldwide workforce of more than 3,500 people. MacLean-Fogg is a privately held enterprise headquartered in Mundelein, IL USA.

In 2013, as they were forecasted substantial growth, MacLean-Fogg connected with Michigan Tech and the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge (CSC), hosted at Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center, as an opportunity to find top engineering talent. A successful venture for MacLean-Fogg, as their brand exposure to over 16 schools participating in the competition led to interested students and immediate hires.

“Our partnership with the Clean Snowmobile Challenge has been a tremendous success for MacLean-Fogg,” states Rob Whitney, President of MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions Engineered Plastics Company. “It’s exposed us to high energy, ingenious engineering students from Michigan Tech and other Universities. The design, budget and deadline challenges these teams face has a direct correlation to our real world manufacturing actions. We enjoy seeing each team’s unique strategies and solutions and interacting with these future engineering leaders.”

Their success with the CSC grew into a partnership with Michigan Tech’s Senior Capstone Design program, supporting ten projects the past two years. “Working with the Capstone teams has been a true win-win for MacLean-Fogg,” says Jack Phillion, Senior Quality Advisor at MacLean-Fogg. “The students have received access and mentoring with real insight to our manufacturing and engineering challenges. For MacLean-Fogg we’ve received a fresh perceptive on some of our challenges as well as actionable ideas making a difference in our factories. The demand across our company to partner with a Michigan Tech Capstone team is high at all our divisions. We’re excited to see what the next group of Capstone engineers develop.”

MacLean-Fogg’s partnership with Michigan Tech has become an example for success on campus. Broad partnership has expanded to Career Services programing with participation in Industry Days (Automotive Day) and Copper Level Partnership.

“For MacLean-Fogg, Michigan Tech has been an excellent source for the next generation of our engineers and leaders,” states Kristin Malbasa, MacLean-Fogg Vice President of Human Resources. “We have Michigan Tech alumni across many of our divisions and at multiple levels of the organization. There is tremendous connection between the needs of our businesses and the quality of the Michigan Tech education. We look forward to continuing our successful partnerships with Michigan Tech.”
