This is a short summary of Michigan Tech’s parking and traffic regulations. The complete regulations and ordinances may be viewed at the Public Safety Office on MacInnes Drive. Please use the links below to find out more information.

General Provisions
Campus Regulation Coverage
These regulations apply to all University property, which includes the entire Houghton campus, apartment housing, golf course, Mont Ripley, Ford Center, and cross-country ski trails.
Insurance and University Liability
The University does not accept responsibility for loss of or damage to any vehicle or the contents thereof. It is recommended that owners carry personal insurance to cover such losses.
Abandoned Vehicles
No vehicle is to be abandoned on campus. A fine plus towing costs will be imposed on the owner of record if abandonment occurs. Vehicles parked for forty-eight hours or more in prohibited areas will be considered abandoned.
Prohibited Vehicles
Hot rods, drag-strip racers, modified stock cars, or other unconventional vehicles (except bicycles, motor-driven cycles, or motorcycles) are not allowed on campus.
Vehicle Maintenance
All vehicles must be in good operating condition. No major repairs or maintenance will be permitted on roads or in any parking areas on campus.
Speed Limit
The speed limit is fifteen miles per hour, unless otherwise posted, on all campus roads. The speed limit is radar enforced.
Snowmobiles on Campus
The University’s snowmobile parking area is near the lakeshore snowmobile trail in Lot 31 near the Minerals and Materials Engineering building. To use this area, register your snowmobile free of charge at the Public Safety Office on MacInnes Drive. Otherwise, snowmobiles are not allowed on University property.
Note: Students living in the residence halls should contact the Housing Facilities Office about the parking or storing of their snowmobiles. Please go to Douglass Houghton Hall Room. G044 or call 487-2740.

Registration of Vehicles
Registration of Vehicles
All persons who own and/or use motor vehicles on campus, including any type of motor-driven cycles, must register them. Vehicle registration is required to obtain a parking permit or a registration decal. Visit Parking and Vehicle Registration for more details.

Vehicle Parking
Normal Parking
Between 5:00 AM and 5:00 PM (except Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays), members of the University community may park only in their assigned parking lots as indicated by their vehicle registration decal or permit.
There is no parking in any faculty or staff lots, with or without gates, except with proper permit or permission from public safety, Monday through Friday between 5:00 AM and 5:00 PM. This regulation applies even if the gates are raised.
Visitor Parking
Visitors may park in the areas designated on the campus parking map as Visitor Parking. Daily (or longer) non-residence hall visitor permits are available from Public Safety on MacInnes Drive and the Admissions Office in the Admin. Building at no charge.
Residence Hall Visitor Parking
Residence hall visitors must register at the reception desk and will be assigned to a parking lot.
Theater Parking
Lots 8, 9, 14, and the Hamar House Visitor Lot are open for theater parking.
Pay Parking
Lot 27 can be accessed for parking by commuter students for a fee of $2.00/entrance. Parking tokens can be purchased from the Cashier’s Office in the Admin. Building.
Metered Parking
Metered parking is available to everyone (one or two hour limit). Meters operate from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Residence Hall Parking
Student may park in Lots 4, 10, 17, and 21 are by assignment only, at all hours, seven says a week.
Students are prohibited from parking in the staff lots for residence halls. They are as follows:
McNair and Wadsworth Hall, Lots 15 and 16, between 2:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Douglass Houghton Hall, Lots 7E and 7W, are restricted to assigned parking only, at all hours, seven days a week.
Free one-half-hour parking passes (to load/unload) are available to residents at the hall reception desk.
Winter Overnight Parking
To allow for snow removal, parking is prohibited on campus between 2:00 AM and 7:00 AM, from November 1 through April 30, except as follows. Those needing to park on campus overnight may ask Public Safety for a special overnight parking permit.
Occupants of University housing may park in their designated parking areas.
Employees who work as assigned shift may park in assigned overnight parking space.
Residence Hall and Apartment Snow Removal
During the winter, snow must be removed from the residence hall and Daniell Heights parking areas. When this is necessary, Public Safety will post notices at least twenty-four hours in advance with details. Contact your residence hall or apartment office for more information.
Motorcycle Parking
Special parking areas have been designated for the exclusive use of motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, and motor bikes. Parking and operation of these vehicles is not permitted in any other areas on campus.
Handicapped/Disabled Parking
Only a person certified as handicapped or disabled by the Secretary of State or, in the case of temporary handicap, by Public Safety shall stop or park a vehicle for any length of time, either wholly or partially, in any designated handicapped parking. Handicapped and disabled commuters must possess a valid, current disability certification issued by the Secretary of State or Public Safety.

Blue-Light Campus Emergency Telephones
Campus emergency telephones are located under blue lights in a yellow box at many locations on campus. See the campus parking map for specific locations.

Traffic Enforcement
Public Safety Officers
All Public Safety officers are state-certified police officers who are empowered to enforce all local ordinances and state laws.

Traffic Violations
Traffic Violations
Moving traffic violations must be paid or appealed at the 97th District Court in Houghton within five days of issuance.
Parking Violations
Parking violations must be paid in the Cashier’s Office in the Admin. Building within ten days of issuance.
