Lighthouse Learners is a program hosted at the Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium, and Keweenaw (CLK). Founded by Barbara and Paul Horton (‘69), Lighthouse Learners aims to make college a reality for those who participate.
Currently, a small cohort of high school students from the class of 2018 are involved with the program (they began in middle school). Lighthouse Learners focus on several areas of personal and academic development, including:
- service learning/community service,
- study skills and success,
- spirit life, and
- building a connection to Michigan Tech.
They volunteer with local charities, stay involved in sports and recreation at school, and enjoy visiting campus. If the students complete all years of the program, they become eligible for a full scholarship to attend Michigan Tech made possible by the Hortons’ endowment.
CPCO coordinates the Michigan Tech side of Lighthouse Learners, including campus visits several times each school year and taking students to cultural enrichment activities, including athletic events and performing arts. Together with the CLK staff who coordinate the program, we enjoy making the future attainable for these students!
