Policy Statement

The University will maintain a Remembrance Garden to memorialize students and employees who were enrolled at or employed by Michigan Tech at the time of their passing, or who left the University due to a terminal illness.


Policy Requirements

One remembrance is permitted per deceased individual.

Only University-approved remembrances will be permitted.

Picking or disturbing flowers, trees, shrubs, and /or landscaping is prohibited.

Michigan Tech will approve wording and the font used for engraving in order to ensure consistency in appearance.

The names and associations to the University of all individuals who are proposed to be honored through Remembrance Garden requests must be verified and approved by the University.

The University reserves the right to maintain the garden as appropriate and to relocate the garden due to unforeseen future campus development.

Reason for Policy

This policy establishes guidelines describing who may be remembered in the University Remembrance Garden, and what the approved remembrance item is.

Definitions

Remembrance - An item determined by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement to be placed in the Remembrance Garden; the item will include the name, years of life, years at Michigan Tech, and the individual's association to Michigan Tech.

Responsibilities

Facilities Management - Develops and maintains the garden. Orders and places remembrance item.

Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement - Maintains policy and procedure, and communicates purpose and use of the garden. Accepts donations and initiates the remembrance item procedure with Facilities Management. Assists with the arrangements for any memorial gathering at the site.
