Michigan Technological University is committed to the safety and well being of its students, staff, faculty, campus community, and the environment. The following required safety programs, in conjunction with the information outlined in our safety guides, inform the safe operation of our institution.

University Safety Manual

Our mission to “prepare students to create the future” involves the use of a wide variety of hazards that require special training and control measures to protect the campus community. The University Safety Manual forms the basis for accomplishing our mission in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

Electrical Safety Work Practices Plan

Provides guidelines for safely working around electrical hazards. Includes provisions for:

  • training,
  • lockout requirements, and
  • specific types of work practices and the required precautionary practices when using portable electric equipment.

Hazard Communication Plan

Outlines Michigan Tech’s written hazard communication program, which ensures that employees with exposure (or potential for exposure) to hazard chemicals are provided with health and safety information.

Hot Work Program

Establishes procedures to prevent fires resulting from open flames or other sources of heat, sparks, or hot slag.

Sets the minimum requirements for the lockout of energy sources whenever maintenance or servicing work is done on machines or equipment.
