SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)
Information and Procedures

SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) made its very startling appearance in March, 2003, particularly in parts of Asia, North America, and Europe, leading to recurring advisories and alerts over several months for travelers to and from these regions. At different points in time, these travel moratoriums specified warnings for mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Vietnam, and Canada. However, by mid-July, the primary monitors of this global health alert—the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—removed all previously identified sites from their alert lists. As of today’s date, there are no countries or provinces on the travel advisory lists and no newly reported (significant) SARS incidents or outbreaks.

Yet, to remain vigilant and proactive, we offer this website, with appropriate and timely updates, so that University students and personnel receive helpful information for personal awareness and guidance. In the event of future warnings or advisories, the University will inform its community of any SARS-related guidelines or recommendations through standard media (newspapers, e-mail, postings, telecommunications, etc.), including this website. For the most current monitoring, frequently asked questions, and recommendations regarding SARS, individuals should refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars or to the World Health Organization’s website at http://www.who.int/csr/sars/en/.
