<description><![CDATA[<p>What’s a university education worth?  That’s a question often asked by students, parents and legislators.</p><p>According to 2013 rankings recently released by <a href="http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=Michigan_Technological_University/Salary">PayScale,</a> Michigan Technological University’s graduates rank 18th in the nation among 437 public universities in the return on investment (ROI) from their degrees. PayScale compares the cost of a college education to the salaries earned by graduates.</p><p>PayScale ranked Michigan Tech in the top 10 for ROI among Midwest schools.  ROI is defined as the cost of attending college compared to the gain in income over 30 years of a college graduate over a high school graduate.</p><p>This year Tech ranked . . .]]></description>

Charles Kerfoot’s insatiable curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery have propelled him into all corners of his discipline and well beyond the confines of Michigan Technological University. For both the breadth and depth of his contributions to limnology, he will receive the University’s 2013 Research Award.</p><p>Kerfoot came to Michigan Tech in 1989 from the University of Michigan, joining the biological sciences faculty and serving as an adjunct professor of geology. <description><![CDATA[<p>Mahesh Gupta, a professor of mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics at Michigan Technological University, has been named a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers.</p><p>Fellows are selected based on outstanding achievements in the field of plastics engineering, science or technology or in the management of such activities.</p><p>Gupta, who joined the Michigan Tech faculty in 1994, is president of <a href="http://www.plasticflow.com/">Plastic Flow.</a> The company markets software to the plastics industry. <description><![CDATA[<p>Tess Ahlborn has been named Woman of the Year by the Michigan chapter of WTS, an international organization dedicated to the professional advancement of women in transportation.</p><p>Ahlborn, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Michigan Technological University, will be accepting the award and giving the keynote speech at the awards ceremony, set for March 14 in Hartland.</p><p>Also being honored is Michigan Tech’s Transportation Enterprise, which uses industry-sponsored projects as a framework for student learning. <description><![CDATA[<p>Sean Kirkpatrick, chair of biomedical engineering, has been named a Fellow of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.  He is one of 69 new Fellows announced by SPIE on Monday, March 4.</p><p>Kirkpatrick was chosen for his achievements in theory and application of laser speckle in biomedical fields.  In a news release announcing the new Fellows, SPIE said: " Kirkpatrick has made valuable contributions to research on the interface between the fields of continuum mechanics, tissue mechanics and optics. His primary accomplishments have been in developing both the theoretical basis and practical applications of laser speckle techniques for biomedical imaging . . .]]></description>

Neuman has been named a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions to the advancement of biomedical sensors and instrumentation with clinical applications.</p><p>Neuman is on the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, where he served as department chair from 2003 to 2010. His research interests lie in biomedical sensors and instrumentation, physiological measurements, perinatal medicine and clinical applications of biomedical instrumentation. He has published 170 journal papers, chapters and books and 250 conference presentations and abstracts. He received five patents for medical devices, two of which became commercial products.</p><p>Neuman has served as editor of IEEE . . .]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Michigan Technological University professor Zhi “Gerry” Tian has been named a Fellow of IEEE for her contributions to ultra-wideband wireless communications and localization.</p><p>Tian is on the faculty of the <a href="http://www.mtu.edu/ece/">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering</a>. Her research interests lie in digital and wireless communications, wireless sensor networks and signal processing. She has published more than 130 journal and conference papers and several book chapters.</p><p>Tian is currently on leave with the National Science Foundation, where she is serving as a program director in the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber System of the Engineering Directorate.</p><p>Tian has served IEEE as chair of . . .]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Michigan Tech has received a national Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from the magazine, <em>INSIGHT into Diversity</em>. The award cites Michigan Tech for “its outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion for the year 2012.”</p><p>The award, announced on Nov. 13, 2012, went to 48 colleges and universities nationwide. They will be featured in the December 2012 issue of the magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. </p><p>Four Michigan colleges and universities were among the diversity award winners.  In addition to Michigan Tech, they are Michigan State and Ferris State Universities and Delta College.</p><p>The magazine selected Michigan Tech . . .]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Michigan Technological University’s Jacob LaSarge has received the prestigious US Air Force Cadet Research Award, presented annually to one Air Force cadet in the nation.</p><p>The Air Force chief scientist selects the winner from among nominees submitted by the nation’s 145 ROTC detachments.</p><p>LaSarge, a mechanical engineering senior and Air Force cadet, was chosen for the leadership and technical ability he exhibited as project manager of the Oculus-ASR Nanosatellite effort. The project is under the umbrella of Michigan Tech’s Aerospace Enterprise.</p><p>The all-student group has developed a prototype satellite as part of the Air Force Research Lab’s University Nanosatellite 6 competition.
