<item><title>Michigan Tech Board of Control Approves Budget, Tuition Rates </title>

<description><![CDATA[<p>At its regular meeting in Houghton today, Michigan Technological University’s Board of Control passed a balanced budget for fiscal year 2014 of $172.5 million. Major sources of revenue include $43.8 in state appropriations and $114.7 million in tuition and fees.</p><p>Next year’s budget is $7 million higher than the current year’s and includes an additional $1 million for financial aid, $500,000 for maintenance and a 3 percent merit adjustment for employees, effective in January.</p><p>The Board also set tuition rates for the 2013-14 school year. Using a new plateau tuition system, undergraduates who are Michigan residents will pay a flat tuition of $6,735 . . .]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Michigan Tech has announced a move to a plateau tuition plan for undergraduates beginning with the fall 2013 semester. The decision to adopt the plateau tuition plan was made by the University’s Financial Data Group after a thorough analysis.</p><p>The plateau will be set at 12-18 credit hours. That means undergraduates will pay a flat rate for a course load ranging from 12 to 18 credit hours. In fall 2011, full time undergraduate students on average took 14.7 credits per semester. In fall 2012, the average was 14.6. </p><p>The dollar amount of the plateau tuition will be determined at the May meeting . . .]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Michigan Technological University, like six other public universities in Michigan, must pay a whopping bill each year to a state retirement system in which employees hired since 1996 have not participated and cannot participate.  And the amount the University must pay is growing every year. <description><![CDATA[<p>At its regular meeting today, Michigan Technological University’s Board of Control approved purchase of a new video scoreboard for the John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena. All funding for the scoreboard and its installation comes from gifts from donors.</p><p>The four-sided Mitsubishi Diamond Vision video board will hang over the center of the ice. Each side is 14 feet wide by 14.5 feet high and includes a 14 by 8 foot video screen.  The total weight of the new scoreboard will be more than 12,000 pounds. </p><p>The Board also approved a new concentration in business analytics.  It will be offered within the . . .]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p>Anyone familiar with Michigan Technological University knows that it is a hotbed of superior ideas. Kampe has been appointed chair of Michigan Technological University's <a href="http://www.mtu.edu/materials/">Department of Materials Science and Engineering</a>, effective July 1. In addition, he has been named the new Franklin M. St. John Professor in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.</p><p>Since coming to the University in 2008, Kampe's research has focused on physical metallurgy, in particular high-performance aerospace materials. He has served on the department's Undergraduate Program Committee and the Faculty and Professional Staff Development Committee and has represented his department in the University Senate.</p><p>"I'm obviously excited to be selected as chair," Kampe said.
