For the third year in a row, Michigan Technological University has received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.  The HEED award recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity.

Michigan Tech will be featured along with 82 other award-winning institutions in the magazine’s November 2014 issue.

“We are thrilled that INSIGHT into Diversity magazine has chosen to recognize Michigan Tech’s many diversity initiatives for a third time,” said Jill Hodges,  director of the Office of Institutional Equity at Tech.  “There is a deep commitment here to diversity and to creating a campus culture that supports diversity, and it’s empowering when an objective external organization commends us for what we are doing.”

Diversity at Tech

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected Michigan Tech based on the University’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and commitment to a broad definition of diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, members of the LGBT community and others.  Specifically, Michigan Tech was recognized for its Center for Diversity and Inclusion programs ; cultural, competency training, which has become a model for other universities;  and efforts to increase the percentage of undergraduate women enrolled in engineering and the diversity of its faculty.

“We hope the HEED award serves as a way to honor those institutions of higher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
