Michigan Technological University has made the Princeton Review’s annual guide to Best Colleges.
The 2017 edition of 381 Best Colleges was released today. Princeton Review, not affiliated with Princeton University, has published its Best Colleges guide annually since 1992.
Inclusion in the guide is based on 143,000 student surveys and input from college administrators and advisors, parents, educators and Princeton Review’s own 24-member National College Counselor Advisory Board.
Princeton Review does not rank the schools. The organization, which is not affiliated with Princeton University, chose the top 381 from more than 2,000 colleges and universities. The guide lists them in alphabetical order.
“We don't believe that any one school is the best overall,” the Princeton Review editors explain. “While academics are important—and some other college rankings focus only on academics—we believe lists that purport to rank schools academically aren't useful and are actually counterproductive. We believe all 381 schools in the book are academically outstanding. But we don't think academics should be the exclusive reason for choosing a school—and in most cases, it isn't. Among other crucial factors (such as location, cost and size), the campus culture is very important.”
The book does include “top 20” listings in 62 categories. Michigan Tech was ranked 15th in a category called “Town-Gown Relations are Great.”
Friendly, Safe
Students’ comments from the surveys are quoted in categories including academics and campus life. “Michigan Tech is in a small town in the middle of the deep North woods, which makes the sense of community remarkable," says one. Other students say that campus is "incredibly safe," that "the atmosphere is very friendly," and that "there are a lot of opportunities to get involved."
Michigan Tech has been included on the Princeton Review’s Best Colleges list since 1994.
“It is a real honor to be included among the best schools in the country on a list of this kind, which bases selection on a variety of factors, including campus culture,” said John Lehman, associate vice president for enrollment and university relations at Michigan Tech.
