With 35 PCMI graduate students currently serving as Peace Corps Volunteers, Michigan Tech has earned the top spot in the 2013 rankings of PCMI and Paul D. Coverdell Fellows graduate schools. Tulane University placed second.

The PCMI program enables graduate students to incorporate Peace Corps service for credit as part of their master’s degree curriculum. The Coverdell Fellows program provides returned Peace Corps volunteers with scholarships, internships in underserved American communities and stipends to help them earn an advanced degree after they complete . . .]]>Tue, 07 May 2013 03:00:00 -0700 <![CDATA[Two Michigan Tech Students Win NSF Graduate Research Fellowships]]>http://blogs.mtu.edu/gradschool/2013/04/19/two-michigan-tech-students-win-nsf-graduate-research-fellowships/Fri, 19 Apr 2013 05:45:30 -0700 <![CDATA[Bear Baiting May Put Hunting Dogs at Risk from Wolves]]>http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2013/april/story88261.htmlBear hunters will tell you that a good way to attract a bear is to put out bait. And in 10 states, including Michigan and Wisconsin, that’s perfectly legal. Hunting dogs are another useful technique in the bear-hunter’s toolkit, and 17 states say that’s just fine.

But who else likes bear bait? Gray wolves, that’s who. And wolves that are feeling territorial about a bear bait stash can—and sometimes do—kill hunting dogs released at the bait site.

Like most interactions between wildlife and human beings, wolf attacks on hunting dogs illustrate a tangled trade-off: attracting bears for the hunters, attracting danger . . .]]>Wed, 17 Apr 2013 12:00:00 -0700 <![CDATA[ESC/BRC Student Research Forum Winners Announced]]>http://blogs.mtu.edu/gradschool/2013/04/05/escbrc-student-research-forum-winners-announced/Fri, 05 Apr 2013 05:48:21 -0700 <![CDATA[Evan Anderson represents Michigan Tech in Distinguished Thesis Competition]]>http://blogs.mtu.edu/gradschool/2013/03/26/evan-anderson-represents-michigan-tech-in-distinguished-thesis-competition/Tue, 26 Mar 2013 06:00:06 -0700 <![CDATA[Isle Royale Wolves Fall Prey to Inbreeding Problems]]>http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2013/march/story87157.htmlMichigan Technological University’s annual Winter Study of the wolves and moose of Isle Royale National Park counted eight wolves on the island this winter, down one from last year. And as far as the researchers could tell, no wolf pups were born in 2012.

“This is the first year since 1971, the year reproduction first began being monitored, that we did not detect any sign that pups had been born during the past year,” wrote John Vucetich, the Michigan Tech population biologist who heads the annual study, in the 2012-203 Winter Study annual report released this week

Michigan I-Corps is modeled after the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps (Innovation Corps) program. Two Michigan Tech teams have participated in the national I-Corps. Earlier this month a team led by Ezra Bar Ziv, a professor of mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics, was selected as the top team among the 24 participating teams from universities throughout the nation. The first NSF I-Corps team from Michigan Tech was led by . . .]]>Wed, 20 Mar 2013 07:09:58 -0700 <![CDATA[New theses and dissertations available in the Library]]>http://blogs.mtu.edu/gradschool/2013/03/05/new-theses-and-dissertations-available-in-the-library-12/Tue, 05 Mar 2013 08:32:36 -0800 <![CDATA[Employers, Students Brave Blizzard to Build Their Futures]]>http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2013/february/story84993.htmlMichigan Tech’s Career Fair is an event awash in numbers, statistics, efforts to quantify the success of our students and the health of the overall economy. The numbers so frequently tell the story.

Behind these figures, though, there are the students and employers themselves, and the careers and lives that they’re building together. Tuesday, the Multipurpose Room at the Student Development Complex hosted hundreds of companies that braved a blizzard to meet the ambitious, motivated and talented students of Michigan Tech.

Representatives of 229 corporations attended, and more than 2,000 interviews were scheduled.
