The Honors House, building number 82 on the campus map and formerly the Ruppe House, is a next-door neighbor of the University Residence on Woodland Road. The headquarters for Michigan Tech’s Honors Institute, the Honors House is home to nine honors students and provides ample space for the group’s operations. The remaining four beds are filled by non-honors students who have returned to campus after at least one year of study.

The idea of converting the Ruppe House—previously used for . . .]]>Thu, 03 Oct 2013 11:35:52 -0700 <![CDATA[Fall Career Fair Features New Companies and Veteran Recruiters]]>http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2013/september/story97329.htmlWith 264 companies registered for the Fall Career Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 24, their 900 recruiters run the gamut from new to returning to never-miss-a-fair.

Among the new companies, according to Jim Turnquist, director of Career Services, is Chevron. Although they have recruited and hired on their own on campus, this year they’ve joined the Career Fair and expanded their search.

“In the past, they focused on geology, but this year they are looking for many different engineering fields: chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical,” Turnquist says. “That’s a big plus.”

Back after a hiatus from recruiting is Procter and Gamble. Remember 2006—when the housing bubble burst and the stock market was heading for its 2008-09 crash, kicking the country into a major recession?

But Michigan Tech did it—and then some. At a campaign celebration at the University’s Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Sept. 19, 2013, Campaign Chair Dave House announced that Michigan Tech has raised $215,366,353, much of it in planned gifts that will be coming in over the next 10 to 25 years.

The findings aren’t just about “looking sleepy” after a late night, or being bright-eyed after a good night’s rest.

For the first time, researchers have shown specific improvement in facial appearance after at-home treatment for sleep apnea, a condition marked by snoring and breathing interruptions. Sleep apnea affects millions of adults—most . . .]]>Fri, 13 Sep 2013 13:00:00 -0700 <![CDATA[Female and Graduate Student Enrollment Rises]]>http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2013/september/story96892.htmlMichigan Technological University, like other public universities in the state, submitted its official fall enrollment numbers to Lansing this week. The news was very good.

Michigan Tech has 1,252 first-year students, the largest freshman class since 2008. The average ACT score and high school GPA of those students are at an all-time high, at 26.7 and 3.66.

Graduate student numbers also rose for the fifth straight year, to 1,359.

“I want to thank everyone all across campus for the work they do to attract the highest quality students,” said President Glenn Mroz. "The results of their efforts speak for themselves.”

Jason Carter, a researcher at Michigan Technological University, conducted the study with 67 healthy volunteers who were either given nine grams of fish oil pills or nine grams of olive oil as a placebo, over a two-month period. They were screened for heart rate, blood pressure and other related metrics before and after the study.

At the end of the test period, both groups took a mental arithmetic test that involved adding and subtracting numbers in their head. Their stress response was measured at that time. Most people probably would agree with that statement, but researchers at Michigan Technological University are pinpointing the physiological reasons behind what is, indeed, fact.

Jason Carter, chair of kinesiology and integrative physiology; math professor Tom Drummer; and graduate student Huan Yang, recently reported some surprising findings in the American Journal of Physiological, Heart and Circulatory Physiology. They claim that younger women’s bodies may handle stress better than younger men’s, but that might not be true later in life.

“It is well known that men are more susceptible to high blood pressure early in life,” Carter says. “However, . . .]]>Wed, 27 Feb 2013 10:24:23 -0800 <![CDATA[Employers, Students Brave Blizzard to Build Their Futures]]>http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2013/february/story84993.htmlMichigan Tech’s Career Fair is an event awash in numbers, statistics, efforts to quantify the success of our students and the health of the overall economy. The numbers so frequently tell the story.

Behind these figures, though, there are the students and employers themselves, and the careers and lives that they’re building together. Tuesday, the Multipurpose Room at the Student Development Complex hosted hundreds of companies that braved a blizzard to meet the ambitious, motivated and talented students of Michigan Tech.

Michigan Tech’s current international student enrollment is its largest ever—1,024—nearly 15 percent of all students on campus. And several programs are adding to that legacy, according to Thy Yang, director of International Programs and Services (IPS).

One of the newer programs partners with Brazil, she says.

“We are involved with Brazil’s Science without Borders program,” Yang explains. “Currently, we’ve got 10 students on campus who are getting all tuition and room and board paid by the Brazilian government for one year, to see if Tech is right for them.”

An exercise science and biological sciences major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Hoffman led the Huskies to a 14-3-2 record with 11 of the wins by shutout. While setting a school record for wins, the Huskies shared the conference regular season title.
