What Makes Little Huskies Unique

  • Little Huskies has been rated at 5 stars out of 5 from Great Start to Quality.  This rating affects the percent of reimbursement eligible families receive from the Department of Human Services.
  • The teaching staff are given time to plan daily which provides the opportunity for them to individualize for the children in their care.
  • Little Huskies staff have regular Professional Development days along with the opportunity to attend a professional conference each year in order to access the most up-to-date research in the field.
  • Within each classroom the children are split up into family groups.  A family group is a smaller group of children within a classroom who work with a specific teacher.  At different times throughout the day, the children have the opportunity to work in the family group with their family group teacher.  This not only makes children feel safe, it allows the teacher to really understand each child's needs in order to provide the opportunities necessary for individual growth.
  • The design of the Center is unique in that it has a living room space with a child friendly kitchen at the other end of the room.  This living room space gives children the opportunity to work in small groups.  They are able to choose an active or quiet activity dependent on their needs at the time.  This helps to control noise and chaos in the classrooms and gives children more choices.
  • The cook prepares lunch in the kitchen where children are present and can observe this process.
  • The children have the opportunity to go outside several times during the day, year round.  The playground is set up to encourage investigation, exploration, and it provides a variety of motor experiences.
  • The children have University facilities available for field trips.  These include the Student Development Complex, the Nordic Ski Trails and Recreational Forest, and the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum among others.
  • Little Huskies is the first center in Houghton County accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
