Retired Faculty and Staff

The Van Pelt and Opie Library encourages retired faculty and staff to continue to use the services, collections, and programs of the library and its archives. Most resources and services are available for use onsite free of charge, including:

Borrowing

All types of books and other media in the library's circulating collection are available to retired staff and faculty through the use of a no-cost Van Pelt and Opie Library Courtesy Borrower's Card. For Michigan residents and with the Courtesy Card, the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) provides access to the collections of most university and public libraries in Michigan. Materials such as books, DVDs or CDs are delivered to the Van Pelt and Opie Library, or any MeL-participating library located throughout the state. For retirees living in other states, the Van Pelt and Opie Library staff is pleased to find a counterpart for MeL in states that have such services.

Access to online databases and other publications

Our databases, journals, reference tools and other library resources are available for personal or academic use in the library using one of the many library workstations. Due to contractual restrictions from database vendors and journal publishers, the Van Pelt and Opie Library and other academic libraries cannot provide remote (off-campus) access for retired faculty, staff, or alumni. The SciFinder database is only available to enrolled students and faculty. The library's contracts allow remote access to emeriti faculty who maintain their college/school status. Michigan eLibrary (MeL) offers a range of databases that can be accessed online as well as for all Michigan residents.

Interlibrary Loan

Michigan eLibrary (MeL) offers self-service interlibrary-loan. Because the Van Pelt and Opie Library is a participant, retirees located near another participating library anywhere in Michigan can borrow books from the Van Pelt and Opie Library. The Library staff is pleased to assist retirees located outside of Michigan to find an interlibrary loan service to support their needs. Emeriti faculty maintain all interlibrary loan privileges.

Reference services

Michigan Tech librarians and archivists offer reference services onsite, through email, online chat, and by telephone. Reference services are available to all retirees.

Workshops and events

Retirees are always welcome to attend any of the library's events, and to register for any of the library's workshops.
