The United States Government is the largest publisher of information in the world. Its many agencies and departments routinely distribute data in the forms of reports and annual publications.

The following list of databases are provided by the U.S. Government to assist in finding and distributing that information. If you have any questions about which database to use or how to use a database, please ask a librarian.

AGRICOLA
Coverage: 1970 - Present

Scope: prvides access to citations on agricultural literature created by the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and its cooperators. Production of these records in electronic form began in 1970, but the database covers materials in all formats, including printed works from the 15th century. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences.

Cold Regions Bibliography

Scope: covers all disciplines related to the region including biological and geological sciences, medical sciences, meteorology, oceanography, atmospheric and terrestrial physics, expeditions, logistics equipment and supplies, and tourism. The Antarctic Bibliography is produced with support from the National Science Foundation with contributions from the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge.

Energy Citations Database (U.S. Dept. of Energy)

Scope: includes bibliographic records of literature in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents.

Homeland Security Digital Library

Scope: provides quick access to important U.S. policy documents, presidential directives, and national strategy documents as well as specialized resources such as theses and reports from various universities, organizations and local and state agencies. The resources are reviewed and selected by a team of homeland security researchers and organized in a unique homeland security taxonomy.
Hourly Precipitation Data Publications
Coverage: 1951 - Present

This publication contains hourly precipitation amounts obtained from recording rain gages located at National Weather Service, Federal Aviation Administration, and cooperative observer stations. Published data are displayed in inches to tenths or inches to hundredths at local standard time. HPD includes maximum precipitation for nine (9) time periods from 15 minutes to 24 hours, for selected stations.

IUPAC-NIST Solubility Database

Scope mutual solubilities and liquid-liquid equilibria of binary, ternary and quaternary systems are presented. Typical solvents and solutes include water, sea water, heavy water, inorganic compounds, and a variety of organic compounds such as hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, esters and nitrogen compounds. For many systems, sufficient data were available to allow critical evaluation. Data are expressed as mass and mole fractions as well as the originally reported units.
Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data (reprints)

Scope: to provide critically evaluated physical and chemical property data, fully documented as to the original sources and the criteria used for evaluation. Critical reviews of measurement techniques, whose aim is to assess the accuracy of available data in a given technical area, are also included.
NASA Astrophysics Data System

Scope: contains four bibliographic databases containing more than 3.6 million records: astronomy & astrophysics, instrumentation, physics & geophysics, and the Los Alamos e-print server. Also provides links to astronomical data catalogs and data archives.
NTIS/GPO DARTS (Depository Access to Reports, Technical and Scientific)
Coverage: 1964 - 2000

Scope: This is a pilot NTIS and GPO project which includes documents from the Department of Energy (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), and NTIS. The documents in the NTIS collection with the PB accession number prefix are the products of many different Federal agencies and include both agency and contract studies. Most reports from 1997-2000 are scanned into the image system.
NTRS: NASA Technical Reports Server

Scope: to provide students, educators, and the public access to NASA's technical literature. NTRS also collects scientific and technical information from sites external to NASA to broaden the scope of information available to users.

Scope: a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

Scope TOXNET (TOXicology Data NETwork) is a cluster of databases covering toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health and related areas. It includes Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), International Toxicity Estimates for Risk (ITER), Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System (CCRIS), Genetic Toxicology (Gene-Tox), Tox Town, Household Product Database, Haz-Map, and TOXMAP. In addition it includes TOXLINE, DART/ETIC, Toxics Release Inventory. Finaly, TOXNET also includes ChemIDplus.
