J-1 Scholar Delayed Arrival

J-1 Scholars are allowed to enter the United States up to 30 days before the Program Start Date listed on their DS-2019 forms.

The government’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) requires International Programs and Services to verify J-1 records within 30 days after the Program Start Date. The process confirms actual and current US addresses and converts SEVIS status from Initial to Active.

If J-1 scholars do not arrive when expected and check in with IPS so they can meet the 30-day validation process, the SEVIS record is cancelled and scholars are listed as out of status by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

To avoid this problem, notify IPS if a scholar is not arriving as expected.
