First-Year Student Residence Hall Waiver

The Michigan Tech Board of Control Policy states:

"All single undergraduate students are required to live in the residence halls during their first full year at Michigan Tech. This does not include commuting students living at home with parent(s) or guardian."

Waivers to the Board of Control policy may be considered in extenuating circumstances on a case by case basis. A student who is requesting a first-year student residence hall waiver must submit a request in writing to the Director of Housing and Residential Life at least 30 days prior to the start of the semester and also before submitting a housing application request form.

The written request for a waiver needs to include a detailed explantation regarding the extenuating circumstance. The student must include his or her name, M number, address, phone number, and email address. Please include documentation to verify the extenuating circumstance and the proposed alternative living arrangement. The letter should include the name, address, and phone number of the person the student intends to live with. A written statement from that person would also be helpful. Incomplete or unverifiable requests will be denied

Requests and documentation may be mailed to:

Michigan Tech University
Director, Housing and Residential Life
1400 Townsend Drive
Houghton, MI 49931

Requests will be considered by the Director of Housing and Residential Life. You will be notified of the decision within ten business days after your request is received.
