What is International House?
The International House (I-House) is an inclusive global community that encourages and welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds and individuals who want to learn more about other cultures. In I-House, you have the opportunity to build a strong community with people from across oceans. You will have a supporting environment where you will work together with others to create your success at Michigan Tech.
International House works with International Programs and Services (IPS) to better assist all students. To learn more about IPS, please visit them at International Programs and Services.
Why should you join I-House?
Do you like to travel? Do you want to learn about history and cultures from around the world? Too expensive to fly abroad, but want to experience other nations? Students from every corner of the world are in I-House and are willing to share their experiences with you.
What does I-House have to Offer?
As with any residence hall area, the cost of room and board includes heat, water, cable TV, Internet connection and local telephone charges. I-House also allows you the opportunity to cook your favorite meals from home, as it has a kitchenette in its center. The kitchenette is a popular hangout for all residents where stories are shared openly over a good snack or meal. Inexpensive laundry facilities are also provided.
This Learning Community provides a warm and open environment for students from all corners of the world to share their stories, learn from one another, and to spread their understanding and positive global perspective to the rest of Michigan Tech. There are numerous social and educational activities and opportunities in I-House, so you are sure to never have a dull moment!
I-House has monthly Cultural Connections where you and your housemates can explain where you come from, what it’s like, and share some stories. Cultural Connections includes food and an open atmosphere to exchange ideas.
On Monday evenings the smell of freshly baked cookies fills the air and brightens that first day of the week for I-House residents. Optional math help and support come with these tasty treats, so bring any math related questions!
I-House also participates in campus activities involving your creativity and hard work to promote positive intercultural relations. Parade of Nations is a favorite event, as marching down the streets of Hancock and Houghton brings a smile to everyone’s face. The ultimate test of team work comes at Winter Carnival time. Find out more about Winter Carnival here.
