Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences Learning Community

Combine academics and an appreciation for the natural world with the Forest Resources and Environmental Science (FRES) Learning Community. This close-knit community is specifically designed for students seeking degrees in forestry, applied ecology and environmental sciences and wildlife ecology and management. Members take courses together, including a college success course and enjoy field trips and close interaction with faculty and staff. The FRES community is located on the fifth floor of West Wadsworth Hall and is nicknamed Treehouse.

What are some typical FRES activities?

As a participant in the FRES program, you will have the opportunity to get involved in numerous social and educational activities:

Social Opportunities

  • Safe House—took third place in 2006 and 2008 along with second place in 2007
  • Broomball—Treehouse has typically had four different teams
  • Month Long Statue during Winter Carnival
  • Movie and Game Nights
  • Visits to the Campus Café
  • Create lasting relationships

Educational Opportunities

  • Meet with the Dean of the Forest Resources and Environmental Science Department along with other faculty
  • First year students are enrolled in “Creating Your Successes” to give them useful information about how to be successful in college
  • Study Sessions in the kitchenette—tree identification review
  • Opportunity to develop strong bond with students with similar interests inside and outside of the classroom
  • Homework help is just across the hallway

What is expected of FRES participants?

  • Gain a new understanding of different people and different ideals
  • To grow as a person both professionally and personally
  • Be proud to be a part of the Treehouse family
  • Live in a co-ed environment
  • Participate in events catered to residents’ interests
  • Pay $30.00 per semester fee that is used to support additional programming, activities and staff
