John had his reasons for specifically choosing Michigan Tech. ''I applied to the big schools in Michigan. They seemed like big party schools and I would just be a number to them.'' John felt he could make an impact at Michigan Tech, as well within the Sparta house.
One of John’s favorite moments of the past year was the cardboard canoe that raced at Homecoming. ''We had two cardboard canoes, actually. We attached them and made a catamaran.'' But their trip was short-lived. ''Half of us went slow and the other half went fast, so the boat pretty much fell apart.'' They continued on though, with most of the crew simply holding the boat together, but with only three paddles. One member sat on his oar upon climbing in and broke it. ''That didn’t help,'' reminisces John.
