Membership Requirements
Being a member of the Honors Institute demonstrates your academic prowess and showcases your drive for knowledge. There are many opportunities during your time at Michigan Tech to do both. To graduate from the Honors Institute, there are a few requirements:
- Maintain a 3.5 GPA. We expect our members to continue their academic excellence during their time here.
- Take an Honors section of the University course “Perspectives on Inquiry”. This course is not necessarily more difficult or time consuming than any other Perspectives section, but it is normally a smaller class size of about 15 to 20 Honors students just like you. This gives you a chance to get to know fellow members, as well as have a more one-on-one feeling in the classroom and working with your professor.
- Complete three contracts by the time you graduate. Contracts are essentially research projects that require about 20-25 hours with guidance from a professor. The titles of these projects will be displayed on your transcript at the time of graduation. This is a great way to showcase your interests and abilities and have it appear in your University record. For more information about contracts, please see “Completing a Contract” [hyperlink to this section].
- Complete the essay portion of a Nationally Competitive Scholarship. This will give you an opportunity to enhance your writing skills with a rigorous editing and revision process. It will also prepare you to write for audience beyond your peers or university. , To learn more about this, please see “Completing Scholarship Essays” [hyperlink to this section].
You are also expected to attend one Honors Institute Event and one General Meeting per semester. You will get e-mail reminders about events and meetings, so choose the one that is best for you. And, you are also expected to vote in any pertinent elections or surveys on Involvement Link, which will be discussed in meetings and emailed to you.
New members should to complete one of their contracts by their third semester. Start early and begin to formulate new contract ideas – don’t try to complete them in the last year!
If you fail to complete or any benchmarks, you may become a probationary member, or possibly resign from the Institute. With all the resources available to you, however, we hope you will complete your Honors Institute requirements and stay an active member.
