Biography

Dr. Xue's research is centered around the development and application of numerical models to hydrodynamic, climate, and environmental problems in the Great Lakes and coastal oceans.  His current research focuses on an integrated regional earth system model (IRESM) for the Great Lakes region, consisting of coupled atmosphere, lake, ice, wave, sediment, land surface, biological components with the inclusion of data assimilation and machine learning techniques. By applying the IRESM to simulate and analyze regional processes across a range of spatiotemporal scales, Dr. Xue and his team, in collaboration with a wide range of scientists and experts,  try to understand and predict how the Great Lakes system responds to long- and short-term natural and anthropogenic disturbances, such as climate variability, extreme events, and coastal hazards, and other lake biophysical processes. Dr. Xue’s research has been supported by NOAA, NASA, USGS, EPA, DOE, NSF, State of Michigan, and other private funding sources.

Dr. Xue's doctoral study in Oceanography at the University of Massachusetts Intercampus Marine Science program, his post-doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as his current research also provided him with exposure to several marine systems, including the Maritime Continent, the Persian/Arabian Gulf, the East China Sea, the Changjiang Estuary, the Gulf of Maine, and Massachusetts Coastal Waters.

Dr. Xue holds a joint appointment – Scientist in the Environmental Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory. His joint appointment with Argonne aims to build a more comprehensive predictive understanding of coastal systems by applying IRESMs across broader scales.
