What is the TMDFR program?
The Transatlantic Master’s Degree in Forest Resources (TMDFR) at Michigan Technological University is a dual master’s degree program offered by
- Michigan Tech's School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science
- Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
- University of Helsinki
After successful completion of this program and defending an MS thesis at both Michigan Tech and one of the two European Union (EU) universities, the TMDFR graduate student will receive two MS diplomas—one from Michigan Tech and the other from one of the two EU universities.
What are my course options?
To participate in this dual MS degree program, a graduate student must successfully complete one year of their MS program at Michigan Tech’s School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science and should have interest in MS programs in forestry offered by the two partner EU universities in Sweden and Finland. In the second year of their MS program, TMDFR students will spend one semester each at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the University of Helsinki, taking classes and doing research on topics related to forest resources.
Are assistantships available?
Currently some funding is available from the ATLANTIS (Actions for Transatlantic Links and Academic Networks for Training and Integrated Studies) consortium—comprised of two US universities and two EU universities. They are:
- Michigan Technological University
- North Carolina State University
- Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
- University of Helsinki
School of Forest Resource and Environmental Science graduate students who are US citizens, or permanent residents, are eligible to receive ATLANTIS funding. These graduate students will be awarded a $12,000 stipend that can be used for travel and living expenses abroad. Support for tuition while overseas is available for highly qualified students.
The ATLANTIS program started in 2008 and this funding is expected to be available up to 2012. The TMDFR will most likely continue beyond 2012, but ATLANTIS funding may not be available.
