Undergraduate Scholarships
The School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science maintains established funds for undergraduate scholarships that enable it to be a leading forest resources and environmental science program in the nation.
Alumni-Established Scholarships
Our generous alumni have established several scholarship funds to directly benefit students in all three of our undergraduate programs.
Arthur J. Dion Endowed Scholarship
The Arthur J. Dion Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to the School’s current and incoming students. Recipients must be residents of the Upper Peninsula with demonstrated financial need. It is renewable as long as a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is maintained.
Edward C. Henricksen Endowed Scholarship
The Edward C. Henricksen Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to forestry students with an interest in the industrial segment. Recipients must be Michigan residents. It is renewable as long as a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is maintained.
William Ruona Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The William Ruona Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to forestry students with proven academic performance. Recipients must be from the Upper Peninsula. It is renewable as long as a cumulative 2.5 grade point average is maintained.
William Todd Endowed Scholarship
The William Todd Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to the School’s current or incoming students. Preference is given to—in order of priority—students who attended Marquette Senior High School, students who attended high school in Marquette County, or students who attended high school in the Upper Peninsula. To be considered, an applicant must demonstrate financial need and sound academic performance. The scholarship is renewable for up to four academic years as long as a cumulative 3.0 grade point average is maintained.
Forest Resources and Environmental Science Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship assists academically deserving students who have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship, which may be awarded to any undergraduate in the School, is renewable for up to five academic years provided that a 2.5 grade point average is maintained. If an initially named recipient loses his or her eligibility, the remainder of the award or any prorated portion thereof will be returned to the principle.
Forestry Alumni Endowed Scholarship
The Forestry Alumni Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to an upperclassman in the School. It is renewable as a long as a 3.0 grade point average is maintained.
John B. and Mae M. Hakala Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The John B. and Mae M. Hakala Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to sophomore, junior, and senior students studying forestry or wildlife management with proven academic performance. If no eligible students can be identified within the School, the scholarship may be awarded to students studying biological sciences. The scholarship is renewable as long as a 2.5 grade point average is maintained.
Jacques and Vann Jorgensen Endowed Scholarship
The Jacques and Vann Jorgensen Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to forestry and wildlife ecology majors in the School. The scholarship is renewable.
C. Raymond Lowe Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The C. Raymond Lowe Endowed Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to students studying forestry or environmental engineering at Michigan Tech. The hometown of a recipient must be based in mid-Michigan or the Upper Peninsula. It is renewable for up to five academic years provided that a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is maintained.
Faculty-Established Scholarships
Recognizing the importance of our undergraduate programs, several of the School’s faculty members and their families have established scholarships to help current students, while honoring their teaching legacies.
Gene Hesterberg Endowed Scholarship
The Gene Hesterberg Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to an upperclassman with sound academic performance and social and civic leadership, and who participates in campus and professional affairs. It is renewable as a long as a 2.5 grade point average is maintained.
Helmuth and Charlotte Steinhilb Endowed Scholarship
The Helmuth and Charlotte Steinhilb Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to the School’s current or incoming. Preference is given to—in order of priority—graduates of Jeffers High School, graduates of Houghton and Keweenaw County High Schools, graduates of Upper Peninsula High Schools, or graduates of Michigan High Schools. It is renewable for up to five academic years provided that a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is maintained.
Professor U.J. Noblet Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The Professor U.J. Noblet Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to students studying forestry. Recipients must be residents of the Upper Peninsula. It is renewable as long as a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is maintained.
Norm Sloan Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Norman Sloan Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to a senior in the School. Selection criteria include service within the School and the University and an interest in wildlife.
John C. Noblet Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The John C. Noblet Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to a sophomore forestry major. Recipients must be from the Upper Peninsula. It is renewable provided that a 2.5 grade point average is maintained.
Friends-Established Scholarships
Several scholarships have been established by friends of the School. They are memorials and tributes to former students and individuals who have shown interest in helping our undergraduate students.
Robert L. Adams Memorial Scholarship
The Robert L. Adams Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to students studying forestry. It is renewable for up to five academic years provided that a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is maintained.
Charles and Patricia Nelson Endowed Scholarship
The Charles and Patricia Nelson Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to the School’s current and incoming students. Recipients must be residents of Michigan with demonstrated financial need. It is renewable as long as a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is maintained.
James C. Lamy Endowed Scholarship
The James C. Lamy Endowed Scholarship provides financial support, in the form of full-tuition awards, to a current or incoming student of the School. Preference is given to entering freshmen who have a strong interest in forest management, demonstrated leadership, as well as sound academic performance, and who are residents of, in order of priority, Michigan, the Great Lakes region, or the US. If all the preceding criteria are equal in candidates, preference should be given to a student with financial need. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years provided the student maintains a minimum GPA of 2.5 for each academic year.
