Foraging for edible plants. Fishing for German browns, or rainbows. Deer camp. Snowshoeing. Shoveling the roof. Building the sauna. Taking a sauna. Cookouts. A project breakthrough, or marathon study session. What Otter River Cabin memories do you cherish?
Faithfully maintained by the Michigan Tech Forestry Club—our student chapter of the Society of American Foresters—the 18-acre retreat is a place for Huskies to learn about the environment, and themselves. To study, or to take a break from Michigan Tech's rigorous academics.
"Successive reviews by USDA Forest Products Lab engineers reveal that the cabin is structurally unsound. We have made the difficult decision to close it to any further use. Our students are heartbroken, but we are developing a vision for the future."
Regular flooding, and time, have taken a toll. The School will carefully remove and repurpose favorite features of the 80-year-old, 1,600-foot cabin, but the structure is no longer safe and must be rebuilt. We ask Michigan Tech alumni and friends to help us raise funds to replace the four-season retreat, so that future foresters can have this formative experience—and Huskies past and present will always have a getaway to call home.
