Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity House Fire Claims One

A fraternity brother at the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity house, located on Ruby Street near the main campus, perished in an early morning fire Tuesday, August 13. The student has been identified as Andrew Maas from Holland, Michigan.

Houghton City Police and fire officials were on the scene shortly after 6:00 a.m. The other six occupants escaped the fire without serious injury. According to the Houghton Fire Department, the state fire marshal determined that the fire started in the kitchen. The stove, which was left on, ignited grease in the range hood.

The survivors of the fire have received help from the American Red Cross and have been offered counseling by Michigan Tech's Counseling Services and St. Albert the Great University Parish.

Concerned parents may contact the Office of Student Affairs 906-487-2212.

Students and family members may contact Counseling Services 906-487-2538.

"We are all heartsick at this terrible tragedy. We are relieved that six did escape, but our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young man who died," said Provost Kent Wray.

Coping with Loss
from Counseling Services

Parents and students may not be sure when to seek professional help. Basically when in doubt, please check with a professional. The following symptoms are normal reactions to a traumatic event, but depending on their intensity and duration, they may indicate the need for professional help:

  1. Problems with memory.
  2. Feeling confused and disoriented.
  3. Feeling angry or sad.
  4. Feeling "numb."
  5. Heart rate or breathing rate increases.
  6. Excessive perspiration.
  7. Change in sleeping habits (sleeping more or less).
  8. Change in eating habits.
  9. Guilt.
  10. Despair.
  11. Anger
  12. Social withdrawal.

Parents should initiate conversation with their sons and daughters and offer support. Listen to them and don't be surprised if they repeat their story several times. Let them know you are there for them, but don't force them to talk (or come home).

Helpful hints:

  1. Take care of yourself (eat, sleep right).
  2. Avoid alcohol and stimulants (such as caffeine).
  3. Seek comfort from others (church, family, and friends).
  4. Give yourself permission to grieve.

Please feel free to contact our office at 906-487-2538 if you have any questions or need help.
