Scholarships Frequently Asked Questions

Scholarships Frequently Asked Questions

01

Is financial aid available for international students?

Financial aid regulations for international students differ from those for US citizens. For more information, please visit the website for International Programs and Services or our aid for international students.

02

How do I qualify for merit-based scholarship?

By being accepted for admission, you are automatically considered for the majority of merit-based scholarships for which you are eligible. Exceptions are career interest scholarships, which are based on interest in specific industries. Recipients of first-year awards are selected based on high school ranking, high school GPA, national test scores (ACT, SAT, etc.), special criteria established by scholarship sponsors, and/or financial need.

03

What about finding scholarships within my community?

Students can receive private scholarships from high schools, churches, and community service organizations, such as the Elks. The best time to search for these scholarships is during winter and spring. Also, large companies in your area or a family member's employer may be a scholarship source. You do not always have to be directly associated with an organization to qualify for a scholarship.

04

What effect will outside scholarships have on my financial aid?

Federal regulations require that you notify the Financial Aid Office so that an outside scholarship can be considered when determining your eligibility. If you receive a scholarship that is not listed on your financial aid award notification, please inform us by first logging into BanWeb.

Select:

    1. Financial Aid
    2. Select Aid Year
    3. Resources/Additional Information

05

Where should outside scholarship checks be sent?

Checks should be sent to the Cashier's Office, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, MI 49931-1295. To ensure proper credit to your account, please ask the donor to include your full name along with your Michigan Tech ID number and/or date of birth on your scholarship check.
