Differential Tuition

Beginning Fall 2014, Michigan Tech is anticipating an adjustment to the tuition differential to reflect a new structure. We are committed to providing our students with an affordable, state-of-the-art education, and a differential tuition plan will better allow us to accomplish this.

Why an adjustment?

Freshmen and sophomores tend to enroll in common, core courses. As students continue on in their majors, they take more specialized courses with fewer students.

At a research university like Michigan Tech, it makes sense that some degrees—such as materials-intensive engineering programs—cost more than others to deliver. This new differential tuition plan is one in which tuition varies slightly by major, aligning tuition with degree program costs.

What is being adjusted?

For many years a $755 differential tuition has been applied to sophomore, junior, and senior-level students who were enrolled in engineering and computer science degree programs. Under the new structure, all students will pay a common, residency-based plateau tuition as freshmen and sophomores, and then plateau tuition plus a tuition differential for juniors and seniors.

How does it work?

The new differential tuition follows the existing tuition structure, with the addition of a differential tuition rate for upper-division students. Lower-division students (fewer than 60 earned credits) will pay Michigan Tech’s existing tuition rate.  Upper-division students (60 or more earned credits) will pay Michigan Tech’s existing tuition rate, plus an additional $150, $300, or $900 tuition differential per semester, depending on the degree program.  The $150, $300, or $900 tuition differential replaces the $755 Engineering/Computer Science tuition rate that was previously in place for some programs.
