January through May, 2014 - Annual Review: Through-out the entire manual, the Michigan Tech and Handbook banners were updated. The entire Handbook was reviewed and revised. The 2013-14 annual review revisions are summarized by section, as follows:

- Under Vice President for Advancement: removed "Development," "Gift Planning and Major Gifts" is now "Major and Planned Giving," "Development Operations and Campus Management" is now "Development Operations and Campaign Management," and "University Marketing and Communications" now reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
- Under the CFO: added Finance (Michigan Tech Fund).
- Under Vice President for Administration: Occupational Safety and Health Services now reports up-through the Vice President for Research.
- Under Vice President for Student Affairs: "Athletic Department" is now "Athletics," "Dean of Students/Student Development" is now "Dean of Students," and "Housing and Residential Life" was removed.

1.4.3 Developing Academic Policy at Michigan Tech - "Grad Student Council" now reads "Grad Student Gov't."
1.5.3 Graduate Faculty Status - Item C, second paragraph read "... appropriate academic unit or by the deans of the appropriate School" now reads "... appropriate academic unit or by the dean of the appropriate School;"
- Item D, the last sentence in the second paragraph read "... with the advice and consent of the Graduate Council" now reads "... with the advice and consent of the Graduate Faculty Council."
1.6 Non-Faculty Academic Appointments - "Postdoctoral Associate" now reads "Postdoctoral Research Fellow."
- Under Postdoctoral Research Fellow deleted the last sentence that read: "Appointments are initially for up to one year, but renewable, depending on funding, for one-year periods for up to a maximum of three years." Added as the last sentence to Postdoctoral Research Fellow: "Initial appointments are for one to three years and renewable up to six years."
3.1.1 Conflict of Interest/Effort - Under Mitigation of Conflicts, the first sentence in the first paragraph read: "... University, or having a relative with a direct or indirect ...." now reads "... University, or having a close relative (as defined by applicable State or federal regulations) with a direct or indirect ...".
- In the second paragraph, deleted the last sentence which read: "Activities which fall under Categories III, IV, and V may require review at the University level."
- In the third paragraph, the first sentence read: "The University President shall ..." now reads "The University Provost shall ...".
3.1.4 Laboratory and Classroom Safety - From the list of Safety Committees: deleted "Presidential Committee on University Safety and Environmental Health," and added "University Safety Advisory Council".
- The last sentence of the page read: "Further information can be obtained from the appropriate" now reads "Further information can be obtained from the appropriate Committee."
3.2.6 Course Grades - Revised grades "I," "X," "P," Q," and "W" to reflect updates to the grading system from Senate Proposal 20-12;
- Revised Audit Grades to reflect updates from Senate Proposal 21-13;
- Revised Academic Dishonesty grades to reflect Senate Policy 112.1;
- Under Mid-Term Grades symbol "SA," the definition read: "Indicates that satisfactory progress is being made in the course at the end of the 6th week of class" and now reads "Indicates that satisfactory progress is being made in the course at the end of the 7th week of class".

3.2.7.3 Scheduling of Examinations During Winter Carnival Week - Added "Senate Policy 603.1."
3.2.10 Student Class Attendance - The entire section was revised to reflect Senate Proposals 6-14 and 24-13 revisions to Senate Policy 102.1.
3.2.13 Teaching Evaluation Policy - Under item 2. Frequency of required student evaluation, the 2nd sentence read: "Student rating of instruction forms will be scanned and summarized only in sections with an initial enrollment of six or more students unless otherwise specified by an individual academic unit. (Senate Proposal 18-97)" now reads: "Student rating of instruction surveys will be sent and summaries delivered only in sections with an enrollment of six or more students unless otherwise specified by an individual academic unit. (Senate Proposals 18-97 and 22-13)."
- Item 3. "Procedures for student evaluations" now reads "Procedures for student evaluations (Senate Proposal 22-13)".
- The entire procedure was replaced per senate proposal 22-13.
4.4 Travel Policies - Under Responsibilities, the third sentence read: "In general, the quality of travel, accommodations, entertainment, and related expenses should be governed by what is reasonable and appropriate to the purpose involved." now reads: "In general, the quality of travel, accommodations, business meals, and related expenses should be governed by what is reasonable and appropriate to the purpose involved."
- Under Travel Policy, item D. Taxi and Other Local Transportation, added the last sentence "Receipts are required when the costs exceed the maximum amount."
- Item G. Tips, the last sentence was added: "Actual tips up to a daily maximum are allowed."
- Item H. Telephone, added "Employees who receive a monthly cell phone allowance may not request reimbursement for telephone calls."
- Under J. Dependent Care, the last sentence "Receipts are required and a maximum of $50/day will be paid." now reads "Receipts are required and a daily maximum will be paid."
4.4.2 Travel on Purchasing Card - Added: "Refer to Accounting Services' web site, found here "https://www.admin.mtu.edu/acct/dept/travel/procedures.htm#Purchasing Card for Travel Expenses" for more information on the purchasing card for travel expenses.
4.6 Research Awards - Under "Research Award," added the sentence: "The nomination should be based on the impact that a person has made toward advancement of knowledge, or the state of scholarship as evidenced by either a sustained productive scholarly endeavor or a single noteworthy breakthrough in research results."
- Deleted the last sentence: "The Research Award, consisting of a citation and honorarium, is presented to members of Michigan Tech's faculty and research agencies."
5.3.2 Payroll Deductions - The first sentence read "... and other mandatory items are ..." now reads "... and other mandatory items (such as wage garnishment for child support) are ..."
- The second sentence read "With your written approval, ... retirement, long term disability, United Way, and credit union." now reads "With your authorization, ... retirement, and long term disability."
5.3.3 Payroll Direct Deposit - The second sentence read " ... by calling Payroll Services or from the Payroll Services web page, found here: https://www.admin.mtu.edu/hro/payroll/index.shtml" now reads "... from the Payroll Services web page, found here: https://www.admin.mtu.edu/hro/payroll/index.shtml or by calling Payroll Services at 487-2130."
6.1.1 TechSelect - In the second paragraph, the following sentences were revised: "You are provided an opportunity annually to review your benefits package" now reads: "Employees are provided an opportunity annually to review their benefits package during open enrollment." The sentence: "It is your responsibility to update or change your package as desired each year during the enrollment period" has been deleted. The sentence: "In addition, you must notify the Benefits Office within 30 days of any family status changes" now reads: "Employees must notify the Benefits Office within 30 days of any mid-year family status changes."
6.2.3.5 Paid Maternity Leave - Deleted the following sentences in the first paragraph: "This document outlines parameters for a maternity leave to be applied within our current policy 6.2.3.1 Approved Absences with Pay which allows the President to approve a leave of absence with pay for specific occasions."
- Under Eligibility, in the fourth item, the sentence read: "Maternity leave should be taken ...," now reads "Maternity leave will be taken ...".
- In the Application Process paragraph, the sentence read: "... and appropriate Executive/CFO/CIO ... " and now reads "... and appropriate Executive Team Member ...;" the last sentence in the paragraph read: "The completed gold form shall then be forwarded to the Benefits office for review and subsequent approval by the president" now reads: "The completed gold form shall then be forwarded to the Benefits office for review and approval."
- Deleted: "Per 6.2.3.1, Approved Absences with Pay requires the approval of the president."
6.2.5 Return from a Leave - The first sentence in the last paragraph read: "An employee returning to work from a leave of absence shall be ..." and now reads: "An employee returning to work from an approved leave of absence shall be ..."
6.3 Retirement/Retirement Programs - The first sentence in the first paragraph read: "Michigan Tech provides two retirement programs options, the Base Retirement Plan or Michigan ..." and now reads "Michigan Tech provides two retirement program options, the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan or Michigan ..." and the second sentence read: "... may be eligible to participate in the Base Retirement Plan" and now reads: "... may be eligible to participate in the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan."
- The sentence in the second paragraph read: "As an employee contemplating retirement, you are encouraged ..." now reads: "Employees contemplating retirement are encouraged ..."
6.3.1 Michigan Tech's Defined Contribution Retirement Plan - "6.3.1 Michigan Tech's Base Retirement Plan" now reads "6.3.1 Michigan Tech's Defined Contribution Retirement Plan."
- Under section 6.3.1, the third sentence read: "To be eligible for the retirement annuity the employee must hold ..." now reads: "To be eligible for the retirement plan the employee must hold ..."
6.3.3 Supplement Retirement Annuities (SRA) - "Michigan Tech participates with outside retirement vendors to provide supplemental retirement programs that allows employees to tax shelter additional money for retirement" now reads "Michigan Tech offers tax-deferred supplemental retirement programs that allow employees to contribute additional money for retirement."
6.4 Workers Compensation - Under "Reporting a Work-Related Injury or Health Claim" the first sentence read: "Complete a Supervisor's Incident and Injury Investigation Report" now reads "Complete a Supervisor's Incident and Injury Report Form."
7.2 Resignation - The last sentence in the first paragraph read: "Appointment for an exit interview should be made with the Benefits Office" now reads: "An appointment for a benefit exit meeting should be made with the Benefits Office."
7.3 Clean-up for Exiting Laboratory Employees - The second sentence in the second paragraph, read: "For example, regulations developed by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Transportation to meet requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA) deserve special compliance efforts." and now reads "For example, regulations developed by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to meet requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) deserve special compliance efforts."

8.3 Institutional Equity - The first sentence in the second paragraph read: ."... the Affirmative Action Officer at Michigan Tech develops and ...." now reads: ."... the Affirmative Action Officer (AAO) at Michigan Tech develops and ....."
9.3.1 Closure Policy - The last sentence read "... assistant vice president for administration, at 487-2280 or at tacoleman@mtu.edu" now reads "... director of Human Resources at 487-2280 or at rlhiller@mtu.edu."
9.3.3 Publishing a Web Page at Michigan Tech - Under section 1.2 Copyright, the entire paragraph was re-written.
- Under section 1.3 Publishing a Web Page at Michigan Tech, in the second paragraph, "www.mtu.edu/wwwhelp" now reads "www.mtu.edu/idstandards/downloads/logos" and in the fourth paragraph "Intellectual Property Administration" now reads "Innovation and Industry Engagement."
- Under section 1.6 Michigan Tech Network Services, the first paragraph read: "Reselling or redistributing network services provided by the Michigan Tech network to individuals or organizations not affiliated with Michigan Tech is not permitted" now reads "Reselling or redistributing network services provided by Michigan Tech IT to other individuals or organizations is not permitted."
- Under section 1.8 Faculty, Staff and Student Home Pages, the second paragraph, "Michigan Tech Student Handbook" now reads Michigan Tech Student Catalog.";- Under section 2.1 Required for School, College and Department Web Pages, deleted third bulleted item which read: "a date the page was last updated. A date helps visitors know the information on the page is checked and up to date. For time critical material such as course information, faculty and staff lists, rate sheets, hours of operation for labs, a page expiration date should be used."
- Under section 2.2 Student Organizations, "Any student organization registered with the Office of Student Affairs may have a home page linked to the Michigan Tech Home Page. All policies for student organizations documented in the Michigan Tech Student Handbook apply to electronic communications, including web pages" now reads "Any student organization registered with Student Activities will be granted a page on Involvement Link*, Michigan Tech's official student organization management system. All policies for student organizations documented in University Policy 2.1006 Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources apply."
9.4 Signature Authority Policy - Numbering scheme was revised from alphabetical to numerical to be consistent with Board Policy 11.13.
- Under item 9. the first and second sentences read: "... compliance with federal and/or state law. This also includes subcontracts/agreements and service agreements related to these agreements" and now reads: "... compliance with federal and/or state law, including contracts/agreements and service agreements related to these agreements."
- The second paragraph read: "President, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Research, Secretary, Treasurer, provided that the Vice President for Research may delegate in writing, ..." and now reads: "President, Vice President for Research, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Secretary, Treasurer, provided that the Vice President for Research may delegate in writing, ..."
- Under item 21, the second sentence read: "President, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Secretary, Treasurer" and now reads: "President, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Secretary, or Treasurer."
9.5.2 Michigan Tech Testing Center (MTTC) - Renumbered from 9.5.10 Michigan Tech Testing Center (MTTC). New section.
9.5.5 Information Technology - Added new paragraphs: IT Procurement and Software and moved Information Security and Compliance before Acceptable Use and Security of Confidential Information. Under Information Security and Compliance, deleted "Information security policies and procedures allow the University to satisfy its legal and ethical responsibilities with regard to IT resources and can be found at https://www.security.mtu.edu/policies-procedures/index.php."
- Under Acceptable Use, deleted "Employees are responsible for adhering to Michigan Tech's information technology policies." Added the second paragraph which reads: "The use of any wireless device that causes interference with the University's wireless network is strictly prohibited. This applies to the entire campus; all departments in all academic buildings, administrative buildings, residence halls and auxiliary buildings, including those not on the main campus."
- Under Security of Confidential Information, deleted "For full text please see the University's Confidentiality Agreement." Added "Annual Information Compliance Survey and Security Awareness Training" sections.
9.5.7 Van Pelt and Opie Library - Entire section was re-written and re-organized. "Highlights of the Building" now reads "Van Pelt and Opie Library (Building)" and moved after Quick Contacts for Faculty. "Access to the Literature, Scholarly and Scientific Resources" now includes paragraphs called "Access, Interlibrary Loan, and Requests and Recommendations." Added sections "Copyright in the Classroom," "Education Spaces," "Reserves," "University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections," "Digital Commons@Michigan Tech," "Patent and Trademark Resource Center," and "Library Technologies." Deleted "Instruction and Learning Support."
9.5.9 Vice President for Research - Moved "Sponsored Operations Office" section to follow Sponsored Programs Accounting.
- Under "Sponsored Operations Office," the section read: "Provides .... data reports, developing and negotiating of non-monetary agreements such as memoranda of understanding, collaborations, international student exchanges, dual degree agreements, and other agreements that do not involve the exchange of monetary resources between the parties." The section now reads: "Provides .... data reports, general and specialized support in the day-to-day operations of the VPR office, and the development and oversight of internal business and data processes through LEAN."
- The Innovation and Industry Engagement section read: "Assists faculty and staff in submitting proposals to external industrial sponsors; including budget preparation, proposal review, proposal submissions and proposal conformity to sponsor and internal guidelines. Conducts sponsored agreement negotiations with industrial and all foreign sponsors. Assists faculty, staff, and students in the commercialization of University intellectual property through technology development planning assistance, patent licensing, and startup business development. Also supports the cultivation and development of comprehensive relationships with industrial partners to further research, technology commercialization and/or fund raising interests." It now reads: "Assists faculty and staff in submitting proposals to external industrial and foreign sponsors; including budget preparation, proposal review for conformity to sponsor and internal guidelines, and proposal submission. Conducts negotiations with industrial and foreign entities for sponsored agreements and with all external entities for non-sponsored agreements including non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, teaming agreements, memoranda of understanding and other agreements. Assists faculty, staff, and students in the commercialization of University intellectual property through technology development planning assistance, patent licensing, and start-up business development. 9.5.11 University Marketing and Communications - Deleted: "Athletic Communications and Marketing handles all media relations for Michigan Tech's fourteen Huskies' teams. They also create publications, coordinate game-day operations for home athletic events, and compile and record game statistics for all sports."
- The first sentence in the last paragraph read: "Finally, the Print Shop provides ..." now reads "Finally, Printing Services provides ...".
9.6.2 Dining - Added "Coaches Corner in the Student Development Complex".
- Alphabetized list by moving "Library Cafe in Van Pelt and Opie Library" before "Memorial Union Food Mall."
9.6.3.1 Meeting Rooms, Conferences, and Catering - Added second paragraph, which reads: "The Memorial Union has four non-smoking guest rooms, located on the second floor. These rooms are perfect for visitors as they are convenient to campus and the rest of the Keweenaw. University departments and conference groups may want to consider day usage of a guest room or suite to use as a caucus room, small meeting room, or for a guest or lecturer to relax and freshen up between appointments."
9.6.4 Check Cashing/ATM - Deleted Michigan Tech Employees' Federal Credit Union from the list of locations, since it is no longer housed on campus.
9.6.5 Credit Union - Deleted the Hancock Branch and its location and hours.
- Updated the Pelkie Branch Lobby Hours.
9.6.6 Identification Cards - The first sentence read: "As part ... get your Tech Express ID Card" now reads: "As part ... get your HuskyCard."
- The second sentence read: "Bring the form ... to the Tech Express Service Center located in the Library and IT Service Center (on the first floor of the Van Pelt and Opie Library) to have your ..." now reads "Bring the form ... to the Library and IT Service Center, located on the first floor of the J. R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library, to have your ...".
- Added the sentence: "For complete details on the use of your HuskyCard, please visit: huskycard.mtu.edu."
- Deleted the following: "With the ID card, you can: Borrow items from the Van Pelt and Opie Library. Set up a debit account to make purchases in retail dining locations, the Campus Bookstore and University Images, campus event ticketing locations, at photocopiers in the Van Pelt and Opie Library, and other areas on campus. Use it to eat in the residential cafeterias after purchasing a meal plan. Gain access to parking lots and buildings designated by Transportation Services. Access the Student Development Complex (SDC) facilities after purchasing a membership. 9.6.7 Keys - The last sentence in the first paragraph read: "If you transfer ... keys entrusted to you." now reads "If you transfer ... keys entrusted to you to Public Safety and Police Services."
9.6.9 Scheduling of Rooms - The second sentence in the third paragraph, read: "Lecture halls and large classrooms in the Electrical Energy Resources Center (EERC), R. L. 9.6.10 A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum - Deleted the following: "A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum, located at 1404 E. Sharon Avenue, is home to one of North America's great mineral museums. The museum features the world's finest collection of Michigan minerals, especially crystallized native copper and native copper in calcite from the Keweenaw Peninsula. The largest mineral collection of the Great Lakes region is on public display as well as outstanding minerals from around the world that include examples of the finest specimen of an individual mineral species, type specimens, and those notable for their natural beauty. The museum's fluorescent mineral exhibit is one of the best in the U. S. The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum is the official mineral museum of the State of Michigan.
