Nuts and Bolts

Building Mechanics

Types of Services

The building mechanics staff provide maintenance and support for the main campus buildings. They report to facilities managers, who are the first point of contact for custodial and maintenance requests and act as liaisons between the department and other Facilities Management units.

Generally, each building has its own mechanic who is responsible for the daily maintenance of the building's operational systems. In addition to all the University campus buildings, the mechanics are also responsible for off-campus sites such as the Keweenaw Research Center.

Building mechanics:

  • Perform routine building maintenance, such as minor repairs to windows, doors, locks, lights, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Share responsibility with custodians for maintaining walks within a few feet of their respective buildings—removing snow from the outside stairs and landings and spreading sand as needed.
