Vehicle Rentals

Types of Services

Michigan Technological University manages a fleet of safe and properly maintained vehicles. Forty-seven vehicles are available for rental by full- and part-time faculty and staff members or student groups for official University business. Husky Motors charges a flat daily rental fee (See box below). It is the responsibility of the lessee to pay for gas. Gas cards are provided with all of the vehicles and charges will be billed directly with the rental billing.

MTU Vehicle rentals for personal use are strictly prohibited. Zipcar membership provides vehicles for personal use. Learn more and get started at:  http://www.zipcar.com/mtu

Mileage Fee Change Effective July 1, 2015

In order to provide the same quality vehicles and services that the campus community is accustomed to, Husky Motors will be making changes to their rental mileage fees. All rental vehicles will be charged an additional fee per mile for any miles over an average of 200 miles per day. The changes will take effect on July 1, 2015, and in order to ease the financial burden to departments, they will be spread over two years as follows:

FY 2016    10₵ per mile if average daily use is over 200 miles per day

FY 2017    15₵ per mile if average daily use is over 200 miles per day

Please note that monthly rentals have an allowance of 100 mile per day and the additional mileage fees will be calculated based on that.

There are no passenger vans available from August 27 - August 30.

† Occupancy for fifteen passenger vans is limited to ten occupants, including the driver, for travel outside of a 100-mile radius of campus.

Delivery Charge

There is a delivery charge of $15.00 (each way) of vehicles to the airport for departing/arriving Michigan Tech guests and employees. This charge will be added to the account of the rented vehicle.

Pickup/Return Schedule

Husky Motors is located in the Facilities Management Building, room 101. Business hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Vehicles picked up before noon will be charged the daily rate for that day. Vehicles dropped off after noon will be charged the daily rate for that day. All vehicles are to be returned with a full tank or a $4.50 per gallon fee will apply.  If traveling on a Saturday or Sunday you should pick up the vehicle keys between noon and 4 p.m. on Friday. Vehicles reserved over holidays must be picked up the last business day before the holiday. 

Husky Motors has updated its vehicle pick-up process to promote the safe, legal, and responsible use of vehicles owned by the University. The new vehicle pick-up process is simple and will require driver's to:

  • Present a current valid driver's license
  • Sign the official travel log consistent with past practice, and also sign the vehicle check-out sheet. By signing this, the driver is affirming that they meet the requirements to rent a University vehicle.

The driver requirements, as outlined in the Husky Motors Policy and Procedure booklet, are:

Any employee, student, or guest assigned to a University vehicle must be at least eighteen years of age and have a valid driver's license recognized by Michigan law. All drivers are required to have no more than a total combination of five (5) current points in the Michigan (or any other) point system, with no single infraction totaling more than three (3) points. Before a vehicle will be released from Fleet Services,drivers must sign a statement indicating that they meet the above criteria.

Please note that keys are unable to be issued unless the steps in the vehicle pick-up process are completed, so remember to bring your valid driver's license with you when you pick-up your rental vehicle.

Cleaning Fees

Husky Motors will assess a $60/hour cleanup fee for those vehicles brought back with excessive grime, food stains, pet hair/dander, and trash.

Cancellations

Failure to cancel your reservation within 24 hours of scheduled pickup and “no show” will result in a $50 fee.

Other Charges

Lost remote entry transmitter or lost keys; to be determined by dealership.
