ELI Activities and Traditions

Michigan Tech offers students many activities to enjoy during their time at the university. ELI students are strongly encouraged to participate in as many of these activities as they can.

In addition to these university-wide activities, the ELI organizes some activities for students. These activities are additional ways to meet people and learn about other cultures, the university community, and the Houghton-Hancock area, its history and culture. Specific activities and trips are announced to students as they become available. Recent trips have included a visit to Hungarian Falls for an ecology unit, and visits to museums such as the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum. During the summer months, activities have included canoeing and kayaking with the Michigan Tech outdoor education program, as well as visits to places of cultural interest around the Keweenaw Peninsula such as the Chassell Strawberry Festival

The International Programs and Services (IPS) office also offers international students a number of activities and trips throughout the year. The ELI strongly encourages students to participate in these activities.  For example, IPS organizes Parade of Nations and International Ski Day and trips to Minneapolis (over Thanksgiving break) and Chicago (over Spring break). Information about these trips is posted on the IPS page under “Programs and Events” and on the IPS Facebook page.
