Diversity Facts and Figures

Michigan Tech’s Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion facilitates the development of an environment that is free from prejudicial discrimination or harassment and that is conducive to learning and individual growth for all campus community members and visitors.

The first goal of the Michigan Tech Strategic Plan is to foster “a world-class and diverse faculty, staff, and student population.” One part of this goal focuses on recruiting, retaining, supporting, and recognizing bright, motivated, and adventurous students.

An institution-wide challenge exists to effectively assess and evaluate our diversity efforts. We regularly measure retention and graduation rates of students and recruitment outcomes of diverse faculty, staff, and students. The information provided in this site describes the current status of some of these measures. The University Strategic Plan dashboard and Institutional Analysis Fact Books contain additional data.

The 2005 Climate Survey provided a baseline from which change could be measured. The 2010-11 Climate Survey and the Climate Study to be initiated in 2015 will result in new recommendations, highlight accomplishments, and inform diversity plan strategies for academic units and Student Affairs and Advancement.

Overview: Retention and Graduation Rates for Women and Underrepresented Minority Students

  • Women are retained (82.5%, first- to third-year students) and graduated (68.7%) at a higher rate in comparison with the overall student population (79.4% and 64.6%, respectively).
  • The underrepresented minority (URM) student population—which consists of American Indian/Alaskan Native, African American/Non Hispanic, and Hispanic/Hispanic American racial/ethnic groups—are retained at a lower rate of approximately 72.1% versus the overall student-retention rate of 79.4%. The graduation rate for URMs is approximately 47.8%, or 16.8% lower than the rate for all students.
