Sutherland a Whirlwind Focused on the Future

John Sutherland

John Sutherland is a whirlwind of activity. Spend an hour with him and you're left trying to catch your breath just from watching him.

The Michigan Tech mechanical engineering professor is one of the main reasons the university is a leader in a field called "sustainable futures." Engineering and science students and faculty focus on how to change processes, such as manufacturing procedures, to make things more friendly to the environment.

Sutherland and the sustainable futures institute have received a $3.6 million award from the National Science Foundation. Along with faculty and students at the partner institution, Southern University-Baton Rouge, Michigan Tech faculty and students will focus on developing the Sustainable Futures Model.

In addition to research, the project will focus on educating engineers and policy makers to consider both life cycle product issues and policy decisions.

"A rapidly increasing world population, over-consumption of resources and contamination of the environment are jeopardizing the ability of future generations to have the same quality of life that we enjoy," Sutherland said.

Now there is a guy looking to the future. Join him and other Michigan Tech faculty and students who want to influence the future of the planet. Create the future at Michigan Tech.
