Biography

David Hand began his professional affiliation with Michigan Tech in 1982 as an assistant research engineer at the Environmental Engineering Center for Water and Waste Management. In 1984 he became a research engineer, and in 1987 a senior research engineer. In 1992 Hand became an assistant professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and was promoted to associate professor in 1996. He served as program manager for the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Center for Clean and Industrial Technologies from 1997-2001. In 2003 he was promoted to professor, and currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental engineering. He became chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2011.
      
Hand has been the co-recipient and recipient of numerous awards, including the Willard F. Shepard Award, the 2000 Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) Landmark Achievement Award, the 2006 AEESP Outstanding Teaching Award in Environmental Engineering and Science, and the 2009 Rudolph Hering Medal awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for the most valuable contribution to the ASCE Journal of Environmental Engineering Division Proceedings. In 2010, he became a board certified environmental engineering member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, specializing in water supply and wastewater.
      
Hand has been involved in over fifty funded environmental engineering research projects. He has authored and co-authored over one hundred peer reviewed journal articles, , six coauthored text books, two patents, and eight copyrighted software programs. His research has been published in the ASCE Journal of Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science & Technology Journal, Water Research Journal, and American Water Works Association Journal.
      
He currently serves as Michigan Tech’s Conflict of Interest Coordinator, as well as an advisor for Theta Tau Fraternity and Program Director of EPD2. In addition, he was a project advisory committee member for the American Water Works Association Research. Hand also served for ten years on an annual review panel for the US Environmental Protection Agency SBIR Phase I & Phase II Nano Material proposals.

Hand received all of his degrees from Tech: a bachelor's in engineering, with an emphasis in environment, in 1980; a master's in civil engineering in 1982; and a PhD in environmental engineering in 1991.
