Are we a good fit for you?
Our team is comprised of nationally certified EMT’s, AEMT’s, and Paramedics. EMT’s, AEMT’s, and Paramedics are eligible to apply for service with Tech EMS. Below, you can find the certification levels defined from least to most advanced.
Certification Levels:
Medical First Responder/Emergency Medical Responder— MFR/EMR (60 hours minimum)
The MFR/EMR provides immediate lifesaving care to patients who have accessed the EMS system. The MFR/EMR is usually the first on scene and will wait for a higher level EMS practitioner to arrive and takeover care. The MFR/EMR takes patient vital signs; utilizes basic airway, ventilation, and oxygen therapy devices; and provides stabilization of the spine and suspected extremity injuries. The MFR/EMR is also trained in eye irrigation, bleeding control, emergency moves, CPR, automated external defibrillation, and emergency childbirth care. This level of certification requires 40 hours of training.
Emergency Medical Technician—EMT (226 hours minimum)
The EMT provides basic emergency medical care and transportation to patients who access the EMS system. The interventions provided by the EMT include those performed by the EMR but with basic equipment found on an ambulance (EMT is commonly the lowest level of certification allowed to work on an ambulance). The EMT utilizes pulse oximetry, advanced oxygen therapy and ventilation equipment, automatic blood pressure monitoring equipment, and limited medication administration.
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician—AEMT (358 hours minimum)
The AEMT provides all of the skills of the EMT with the addition of the use of advanced airway devices,monitoring of blood glucose levels, initiation of intravenous and intraosseous infusions, and administration of a select number of medications. The AEMT provides limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation to patients in the pre-hospital environment.
Paramedic (1,250 hours minimum)
The scope of practice of a Paramedic includes the skills performed by the EMT and AEMT with the addition of more advanced assessment and patient management skills. The Paramedic is the highest level of EMS practitioner. Paramedics perform advanced assessments, form a field impression, and provide invasive and drug interventions as well as transport the patient. Their care is designed to reduce disability and death of patients who access the EMS system.

Training:
EMS training has to be done through an NREMT recognized agency. Michigan Technological
University is one of the many recognized agencies in the UP and we offer EMT training
for students, faculty, and staff members. Depending on where it’s being taught, EMT
training can cost anywhere between $1,000 and $1,500. However, those accepted into
our yearly, competitive EMT class will receive top of the line training at almost
no cost. Michigan Tech will cover almost the entire cost of training in exchange for
1year of service with Tech EMS. You don’t have to be trained by Michigan Tech in order
to serve with Tech EMS, and if you hold a current EMT, AEMT, or Paramedics license,
you’re welcome to apply for membership. For more specific information on the training

Time commitment:
Time is a precious commodity and often a big factor for prospective members. We have
tried to breakdown what sort of time commitment is required to be a part of Tech EMS.
Basically, as a part of our team, you’ll be expected to respond to calls, cover special
events, and attend training sessions.Within our team, we’re broken up into squads
of responders lead by lieutenants and squad leaders. Squads rotate through shifts
of being on-call. During your on-call period, you’ll be expected to respond to every
emergency call that goes out, unless you’re in class. Being a student comes before
being a responder, which is why we also certify faculty and staff members. Arrangements
can also be made with your lieutenant to accommodate other scheduling conflicts (sports
teams, jobs...), to a certain extent. Tech EMS is responsible for providing emergency
medical coverage for certain university events, such as sports games, orientation
week activities, parades, and other functions. As a member of our team, you are expected
to help cover these events.
The only other time commitment we require is attendance of our periodic trainings. We pride ourselves on providing top of the line care at a second’s notice, and that pride can only come with practice. We hold training sessions often, during which we will review the skills members feel are most important at the time.
