Corporate Advisory Board—Mission

Board Pillars: Educate, Advocate, and Resource for Diversity

Michigan Tech's strategic goals include attracting and supporting a diverse, world-class faculty, staff, and student population. By promoting a diverse and multicultural community, the university hopes to create an active and rigorous discovery-based learning environment grounded in science, engineering, technology, sustainability, and the business of innovation.

The Corporate Advisory Board for Institutional Diversity (formerly the Educational Opportunity Diversity Corporate Advisory Board) was established in 2000. Its mission is centered around educating, advising, advocating for, and helping to resource the University’s various diversity initiatives.

Advise and Educate for Diversity

  • Benchmark with other universities
  • Provide orientation for new board members
  • Mentor key people/Michigan Tech
  • Assist with recruitment and retention
  • Identify promising students with aptitude in STEM subjects *
  • Keep Michigan Tech advised on corporations and current trends
  • Advise on best practices
  • Leverage partnerships with other Michigan Tech departments/organizations
  • Actively market diversity and performance review strategies

Advocate for Diversity

  • Work with Michigan Tech students, faculty, and deans to connect with corporations, internships, networking opportunities, speakers (focus/topics) *
  • Meet with faculty, deans, department chairs, and students during CAB meeting (fall & spring)
  • Use community – government/state and education meeting (planning)
  • Use focus groups
  • Ask deans for input
  • Provide corporate internships/co-ops/other opportunities *
  • Actively market diversity and performance review strategies

Resource for Diversity

  • Private support for scholarships through corporations, individuals, and other sources *
  • Provide co-ops and internships *
  • Engage alumni in giving toward diversity
  • Develop annual events (i.e. GLI, golf outings, etc.)
  • Identify foundation support – include community foundations
  • Host small activities
  • Help connect Michigan Tech with people and corporations *
  • Provide proposal support as partners
